Earlier this year, we worked with an emergency preparedness expert to put together emergency plans for each of our states. When you operate in Florida, North Carolina, Georgia, Texas, and Louisiana, it's the smart thing to do. After helping get IDs after Harvey and Michael, sending shipments of water and supplies to volunteers in rural Georgia, and having to look for volunteers and staff in the Florida Panhandle, we are very aware of how much our team is impacted by these storms.
But it's not just staff and volunteers. Our clients and community members are impacted too. Jennifer Costa, our national volunteer director, sent me a text from the Florida coast as she was putting up her storm shutters and getting her kids ready to evacuate. Messages were coming out from the storm shelters: Don't forget to bring your ID.
Yep. Want to escape a hurricane? You'd better have ID.
Of course, we know, and you know if you follow us, that the people who don't have ID are the same folks who often don't have the resources to evacuate, don't have homes to hunker down in, and don't have anywhere to go. The most vulnerable in our country are always more vulnerable in a storm.
We are working hard every day to make sure that we help people get the IDs they need BEFORE the storm comes, and that we help with recovery afterwards. Dorian is here today. Tomorrow, we'll have a lot of work to do.
