John,
ICE just made two moves I can’t stay quiet about.
They’re turning a shuttered prison in Hertford County into a 1,400-bed detention center — one of the biggest on the East Coast. The state didn’t approve it. Governor Stein opposes it.
And here’s why it matters: ICE’s own leaked data [[link removed]] shows 73% of people booked into their custody this year had no criminal conviction. Only 5% had a violent one. This isn’t “the worst of the worst.” It’s fear-based political theater, and now they want to run it out of North Carolina.
Then there’s this: ICE is about to spend up to $20 million on gloves that deliver electric shocks. [[link removed]] Grab someone’s wrist, press a button, they drop. A former NYPD chief who tested one said it buckled his knees. The maker sells it as a way to make people “compliant.” Think about who that gets used on.
So here’s where I stand. When I’m District Attorney, the law will be applied evenly to everyone in Wake County. That includes federal agents. Nobody will get a free pass if they break state law.
But I can’t build an office that answers to the people of Wake County without you. Can you chip in $25 today? [[link removed]]
