[Surfers Against Sewage logo <[link removed]>] Hi John,
You shouldn’t have to gamble with your health to cool off this summer. A morning surf, a paddle with the kids, a swim in your local river - these should be some of the best bits of summer. Not something that leaves you reaching for the sick bucket. 🤢 But 881 people have told us they’ve been ill after spending time in the water during this summer’s heatwaves, leading to 913 days off work or school. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. 🫠 Have you ever been sick after being in the water? Tell us what happened so we can build our evidence base to fight the polluters. 👇 [Tell us more <[link removed]>] Despite drought conditions and hosepipe bans across the UK, water companies are STILL dumping sewage into our waters during dry weather - which, by the way, is totally illegal. These are the same companies telling us to use less water while 2.6 billion litres a day disappear through their crumbling, leaky pipes. And now, they want us to pay even more for their failures. Ofwat has given 13 water companies the green light to hike bills to fund investment. The audacity. 🤡🤡🤡 But there’s one person whose response we’re VERY interested in...
Andy Burnham has said: “Customers cannot be treated as a blank cheque.” “Serious pollution incidents are at record levels and the pipes are still leaking.” “Our water industry has clearly not been working for people for far too long.” “That’s why this government will be looking at how we can give the public more control.”
👀👀 We agree. But will Andy follow through? The Clean Water Bill is heading to Parliament in a matter of months. And right now, we have a crucial window to make sure it delivers the radical transformation our waters desperately need. We need campaigners like you to show the government that we’re NOT backing down. ✊ More than 316,000 of you have already signed our petition. We’re on a mission to reach 350,000 signatures before we hand it in at Number 10 on September 3rd – a number Andy B can’t ignore. That’s 34,000 signatures in three weeks. If everyone reading this email shares with friends and family, we’ll easily hit that. Let’s go! [Sign the petition <[link removed]>] [Then share it with your mates > <[link removed]>] Let’s make some noise. Surfers Against Sewage 🌊
