Did you know we're home to the first public library in America?

And the first public school?

And the first university?

That’s what’s so special about Massachusetts: We've always believed that a community is stronger when people can walk into a library, pick up any book, and discover a whole new world inside it.

So last week, I signed a law to protect exactly that: the freedom to read.

This law keeps book bans out of Massachusetts schools and libraries, sets a fair and open process for reviewing materials, and protects the librarians and teachers who help our kids find their next favorite story.

Kids should get to read books that challenge them, inspire them, make them laugh, and help them grow. Nobody should get to yank a book off the shelf just because they don't like the ideas inside it.

Across the country, we're watching book bans spread and librarians get harassed for doing their jobs. Not here. In Massachusetts, we don't ban books and we don’t bully our librarians — we celebrate them.
