A Note from the Executive Director

The End of Summer

I have always had a love/hate relationship with August. As children, we were still amid baseball and summer shenanigans, while our parents started salivating about the first day of school. Advertisements on TV switched from water parks and outdoor recreation to ads for school supplies and clothes. After being completely feral for two months, we had to start thinking about new classes, new teachers and depending on your age, new buildings to navigate. It was enough to send the average 10-year-old into a tailspin.

44 years later, I still find that my love/hate relationship with August remains. Even for this old man, the beginning of summer brings with it the promise of beautiful sunny days and skies filled with glowing stars at night.

When I look into the night sky these days, I often find myself transported to a simpler time 30 years ago when I was a camp director at Camp Lions Den in Imperial, Missouri. Acre upon acre of the most beautiful land you will ever see. At night, when my campers and staff were sound asleep in their cabins, which is when camp truly came alive for me. Each night I would do my midnight walkthrough to make sure camp was secure and everyone was where they were supposed to be. Sometimes it was just me and other times it was me and Bear, our camp dog. Two nocturnal souls without care in the world. A few hours of freedom, until sunrise reignited my responsibilities.

I would walk through camp multiple times and then once I was certain that everyone was safe, I would hop in my jeep with Bear in toe and head up to the Plateau. The Plateau was this giant open field surrounded by trees on all sides and may have been the best place to stargaze in all of Missouri. If I had my four-legged companion, I would pull a sleeping bag out and lay on the grass for hours and watch the show while Bear chased whatever Bear was chasing at that moment. Eventually, he would settle down on the sleeping bag with me. It always helped if I remembered to bring treats. Other nights, I would lay on the hood of my jeep and get lost in the stars.

As a camp director, I slept extraordinarily little. From 6:00am – 11:59pm, my universe revolved around my campers and staff. 12:00am -5:59am, that was my time to breathe; everyone was safe and accounted for and the world was still, except for me, Bear, and our other nocturnal soulmates.

August brought with it the last days of summer camp. And, although I ran programs with youth year-round, after school and weekend programming simply was and is not the same. Summer Camp remains my be-all and end-all. It has been years since my residential camping days, but summer always brings those memories flooding back. My love/hate relationship with August exists most of all because my very last summer as a camp director ended in August.

Trust, Care, and Growth: A Mother’s Experience at Community Kids Stepping Stones Academy

At Community Action, we believe in creating opportunities that strengthen families and empower individuals. Liz’s story is a beautiful example of what that mission looks like in real life—coming full circle as both a participant and now a valued staff member.

From Participant to Team Member

Liz’s connection to Community Action began years ago through the W2 program. As a young mother, she utilized drop-in child care services while completing online coursework. Over time, those early experiences opened the door to something more.

“My journey started when I was part of the W2 program,” Liz shares. “Eventually, I had my daughter in the drop-in center—and that’s when everything began to fall into place.”

After seeing firsthand the support and care provided through Community Action programs, Liz transitioned into a full-time role with the organization. Today, she serves as a custodian, helping maintain safe and welcoming spaces across Community Action sites.

“It just felt like the right fit,” she says. “You never know where life is going to take you until it takes you there.”

A Parent’s Trust in Community Kids Stepping Stones Academy

When Liz joined Community Action, choosing child care for her young daughter became an important decision. Having had a difficult experience with a previous provider, she knew trust would be key.

That’s what she found at Community Kids Stepping Stones Academy in Beloit.

“I enrolled my daughter while I started working here,” Liz explains. “I loved how the staff treated her—the respect, the care, and the activities they planned. It made all the difference.”

Liz’s daughter, now 19 months old, has thrived in the program. Despite being one of the youngest in her group, she is already showing strong developmental progress.

“She’s learning so quickly—her listening skills, her engagement—it’s amazing to see,” Liz shares. “Even at home, we notice how much she’s growing.”

Just as meaningful are the small, joyful moments.

“She dressed up in a bumblebee costume during playtime once, and she was so happy and engaged—it really stuck with me.”

For Liz, knowing her child is safe, supported, and excited to learn brings peace of mind every day.

“It feels good to know my daughter is cared for. I see the teachers and the impact they make every day—they really take the time to help each child grow.”

A Supportive Environment That Makes a Difference

Liz credits Stepping Stones Academy’s environment as a key reason her family has had such a positive experience.

“The staff are organized, caring, and really focused on creating a great environment for the kids,” she says. “You can see the difference right away.”

Having the opportunity to work in the same organization where her daughter is enrolled adds another layer of connection and confidence.

“I know the staff personally, and I trust them. That means everything as a parent.”

Liz also appreciates the thoughtful activities offered—painting projects, music time, and seasonal crafts that her daughter proudly brings home.

“These little things matter. They show how much the teachers care.”

Living the Mission—At Work and Beyond

As an employee, Liz brings her personal experiences into her daily work. Her role as a custodian may be behind the scenes, but her impact is deeply felt.

“Working here suits who I am as a person,” she says. “Helping others is fulfilling.”

She lives out Community Action’s mission not just through her job, but through her actions. Liz regularly donates food and essentials to support those in need and contributes to the community sharing table at the main office.

In one memorable moment, she recalls providing a meal to someone experiencing homelessness.

“He said he hadn’t had a real meal in days. Seeing that—it fills your heart. It’s why we do what we do.”

She has even gone beyond, bringing clothing and meals for individuals in need who visit Community Action—quietly making a difference in ways that reflect the organization’s core values of dignity, compassion, and respect.

Creating Opportunities for Families

As a single mother of two daughters—including an 11-year-old—Liz values the balance and support she has found through Community Action.

“This job has helped me create a better life for my family,” she shares. “It allows me to be there for my daughters while also giving back to my community.”

Her experience as both a parent and an employee gives her a unique perspective on the organization’s impact.

“I see it every day—how people are treated with respect, how families are supported, how lives are changed,” Liz says. “People here really care.”

She especially enjoys seeing former participants return and share their success stories.

“It’s inspiring to hear where they are now. It shows how much of a difference this place makes.”

A Message to Other Families

For parents considering Community Kids Stepping Stones Academy, Liz has a simple and powerful message:

“Every child is treated equally—with care and respect. Even kids who start out shy or unsure begin to open up so quickly. Within just a week, you can see positive changes.”

Part of the Community Action Family

For Liz, being part of Community Action means more than just employment—it’s about belonging.

“It means everything to be part of an organization that supports families like mine,” she says.

Her journey—from program participant to parent to staff member—is a testament to the lasting impact of Community Action’s work.

Community Spirit Shines Despite Rain at

Back to School Community Health Fair

Despite rainy weather, the Back-to-School Community Health Fair was a tremendous success, thanks to the resilience of our community and the dedication of our partners. With all activities moved indoors to the Beloit Memorial High School Field House, families still showed up in force for a day focused on preparing students for a successful school year.

Community Action, Inc., in partnership with the School District of Beloit and numerous community organizations, helped distribute nearly 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to local students. Families also had access to health and wellness resources, community information booths, free haircuts, food, games, and family-friendly activities throughout the event.

This incredible turnout highlights the power of community collaboration and our shared commitment to ensuring every child has the tools and support they need to learn, grow, and thrive. We extend our sincere thanks to all of the volunteers, sponsors, community partners, and families who helped make this event such a memorable and impactful day.

Together, we are helping students start the school year confident, prepared, and ready to succeed.

Neighborhood Clean-Up Days

Makes a Big Impact

Community Action, Inc.'s annual Hackett and Merrill Neighborhood Clean-Up Days were a tremendous success, bringing residents together to create cleaner, safer, and more welcoming neighborhoods.

Thanks to the participation of community members, volunteers, and local partners, the two events resulted in the collection of a significant amount of unwanted household items and recyclable materials.

Together, residents filled eight dumpsters, recycled two truckloads of tires, and safely disposed of a large volume of electronics.

These events provide residents with an opportunity to take pride in their neighborhoods while promoting environmental responsibility and helping keep communities free of clutter and potential hazards.

Community Action, Inc. extends its sincere gratitude to everyone who participated, volunteered, and supported this year's clean-up efforts. By working together, we continue to strengthen our neighborhoods, build community connections, and create healthier environments where families can thrive.

Thank you to all who rolled up their sleeves and helped make this year's Hackett and Merrill Neighborhood Clean-Up Days a success!
