Governor DeWine Announces Funding to Improve Bike and Pedestrian Infrastructure

(COLUMBUS, Ohio)—Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) Director Pamela Boratyn announced today that over $21 million in grants will be awarded to improve safety for bicycle and pedestrian traffic through the Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) [ [link removed] ]. The funding will support 17 projects in 16 counties.

"These new projects are about more than just paving a path; they're about making communities safer and more vibrant,” said Governor DeWine. “This is an investment in Ohio's future and a commitment to building a more connected, healthy, and accessible state for all."

TAP provides funding for projects defined as transportation alternatives, including on- and off-road pedestrian and bicycle facilities; infrastructure projects for improving non-driver access to public transportation and enhanced mobility; community improvement activities; and environmental mitigation; recreational trail program projects; and safe routes to school projects.

“Safety is always our top priority, no matter the mode of transportation. These partnerships with local governments significantly contribute to keeping Ohioans who walk and bike safe, but we also need motorists to do their part. Drop the distractions, pay attention, obey the speed limit, and drive sober,” said Director Boratyn.

Projects are selected based on committee recommendations and a scoring system with a focus on safety, connectivity, and preservation. Investments were prioritized in areas of the state with high demand and need for walking and biking and implementation readiness. Funding awards emphasized both short-term infrastructure projects that could be delivered quickly as well as infrastructure projects of statewide significance.
