Good news! The Holly Springs Ordinance to ban the open carrying of weapons on certain town properties passed the first vote 3-2. There were 211 comments in favor of the ban and 85 opposed. These comments showed that this ban is important public policy to protect people from fear and intimidation and worse.

But… we are not done yet. The ordinance needs to be voted on again at the Town Council's September 15th meeting and people from across the state are sending in comments against the ban due in part to this Raleigh News and Observer article about the first vote. So, we need people to comment in support of the ban.

Can you send in a comment today? We need to thank the council members that took the courageous vote to ban open carry and ask that they vote the same way on September 15th. It is OK to comment for a second time. Thank you for speaking up for public safety!

Tell Holly Springs Town Council to Ban Open Carry on Town Property!

On Tuesday, September 15th, the Holly Springs Town Council will again consider an ordinance, Ordinance No.: 20-04, to limit the open carrying of firearms on some town property.

North Carolinians Against Gun Violence strongly supports this ordinance and the Town Council needs to hear from the public.

Can you email the Town Council to let them know that you support banning weapons on certain town properties? Please do this before 5pm on Monday, September 14th. You do not need to live in Holly Springs to comment.

Many Wake County municipalities already prohibit the open carrying of firearms at town and park/recreation facilities. NCGV believes that Holly Springs also should adopt this common sense ordinance that will help protect people from gun violence, fear, and intimidation.

We must counter opponents of the ordinance from across the state who will comment. In fact, many spoke in opposition of the limiting of concealed carry on town property at the  Holly Springs Town Council meeting in August and helped defeat that ordinance. We must fight to ensure the ordinance banning open carry on certain town properties is approved.

While some may argue that shooters target gun free zones, facts don’t support that assertion. The reality is that shooters generally target a location based on an emotional grievance or an attachment to a particular person or place, not on whether a gun free zone ordinance is in effect. Prohibiting open carrying of firearms at town and park/recreation facilities is much more likely to reduce gun violence than increase it.

The Holly Springs Town Council needs to hear from you BEFORE 5 pm on September 14th that you support making certain Holly Springs town properties open carry free zones because it is sound public policy to help keep everyone safer. So please email the Town Council with a simple message: Pass the Deadly Weapons Ordinance that would prohibit the open carrying of firearms on certain town properties!

Thank you,
Becky
