At daycare, her Orbis-trained caregiver noticed that the five-year-old was squinting and struggling to see. Mobasshira was then immediately referred to Orbis’s partner hospital for vision testing and treatment.

Mobasshira’s story is not unique—it also represents 90 million other children around the world who suffer silently because their families can’t afford or access proper eye care.

In fact, Mobasshira’s mother, Mahinoor, was very worried about the cost of surgery. She also feared that her daughter would be bullied at school for her eye condition, called strabismus. Poverty had already deeply affected their day-to-day life in Bangladesh, and Mahinoor feared it would take away Mobasshira’s future too.

But strabismus and other vision impairments, if detected early, can be corrected before they cause permanent damage. That’s why early intervention is so important—it prevents vision problems that limit social inclusion, schooling, and employment.
