Axon’s Post-Earnings Pullback May Be More About Valuation Than Growth

Axon Enterprise Inc. (NASDAQ: AXON) delivered a strong earnings report, but the stock fell in after-hours trading, and those losses carried over into the next day. The stated reason is inventory concerns, which are being exacerbated by higher memory costs.

But the real culprit is a familiar one for AXON shareholders. The stock is overvalued, which means investors need a perfect earnings report—and Axon’s report came in slightly short of that.

Axon Delivers Another Beat-and-Raise Quarter

Axon's second-quarter numbers left little doubt about demand. Revenue hit $904.4 million, up 35% year over year. That marks one of the company's strongest quarterly growth rates in recent memory.

Adjusted EBITDA climbed to $242 million, representing a 26.8% margin. That's up from 25.7% in the same quarter last year. Profitability is scaling alongside growth.

Axon also raised its full-year 2026 revenue growth guidance to 32% to 34%. That's up from the prior forecast of 30% to 32%, issued in May.

Adjusted EBITDA margin guidance held steady at approximately 25.5%. Capital expenditure guidance also stayed unchanged, between $160 million and $190 million. Both signal confidence in the existing cost structure.

Net revenue retention reached 126%, extending a five-year climb from 119% in Q2 2022. Future contracted bookings hit $15.1 billion, more than quadrupling over that same span. These are the kinds of numbers that typically support a premium valuation.

Why Investors Sold AXON Stock Anyway

Axon guided for a slightly lower adjusted gross margin of 62.9%, down from 63.3%. It also guided for a gross margin of 75.1%, down from 78.9%. The company cited a higher mix of professional services revenue and new product offerings that it's in the process of scaling.

That's not too alarming, particularly considering that these are still very healthy margins. But many high-speed trading programs don't make that distinction. They see that A is lower than B, and that triggers selling.

A larger concern was Axon’s decision to withdraw its operating cash flow and free cash flow (FCF) guidance. In Q1 2026, the company guided to $600 million and $450 million in those categories, respectively.

Once again, this doesn't necessarily point to bad news. But for a stock that's overvalued by conventional metrics, investors want to see FCF growth to support the underlying growth. Furthermore, the fact that Axon didn't provide a reason for not giving the numbers adds to the uncertainty.

Is AXON Stock Still a Buy After Earnings?

AXON is trading well below its consensus price target of $730.92. Those price targets have continued to move higher, which is a bullish sign.

There’s a reason for that. Axon is the unquestioned leader in its law enforcement technology niche. It also continues to press that advantage with strong year-over-year revenue growth.

On the other hand, institutional ownership has been drifting lower. That doesn't mean institutions are bailing on Axon. Nearly 80% of the float is owned by institutions. However, over the last 12 months, selling has outpaced buying by nearly a 5:1 ratio. That means bullish speculators and retail investors are swimming against the current.

But shorting AXON may not be the right choice either. Short interest is higher than the stock's historical average, but it's still only about 3.8% of the float.

The better option for those on the sidelines is to wait for a better entry point, which analysts may be signaling as they continue raising their price targets.

Technical Outlook: Can AXON Hold Key Support?

AXON shares fell sharply after earnings, though the stock remained well above its 50-day simple moving average. That keeps the medium-term uptrend technically intact.

The immediate post-earnings trading range showed real two-sided volatility. Sellers pushed the stock to a fresh session low before some buyers stepped back in.

The 50-day simple moving average sits at $508.70. Price remains well above that level, keeping the medium-term uptrend intact.

Zooming out, AXON bottomed near $360 to $400 between February and June. Shares then rallied sharply, touching a 2026 high near $650 in July.

The post-earnings pullback brings the stock back toward the mid-$500s to $600 zone. That range acted as resistance earlier this year, so it may now offer support.

The MACD reads 5.41, with a signal line of 19.37. The histogram sits at 13.95, still in positive territory. That configuration suggests momentum has cooled from its July peak but hasn't turned outright bearish. A close below the 50-day average would change that picture.

Session volume rose after earnings, and heavier volume on a down day often points to institutional selling, not just algorithmic noise.

Investors watching for a better entry should track how AXON behaves near the $550 to $580 zone. A hold there would keep the broader uptrend structure intact.
