Measles is one of the most contagious diseases in the world.

It’s also one of the most preventable.

As a doctor, let me be clear up front: Measles can’t be cured or prevented with Vitamin A or cod liver oil. The only reliable way to stop its spread is through vaccination.

So it’s both frustrating and frightening when avoidable public health outbreaks like this occur:

This isn’t random. It’s the direct result of stripping away public health programs and funding that used to keep outbreaks like this from happening in the first place — and the dangerous and widespread disinformation about vaccines this administration spreads.

Bottom line: the record-high measles outbreak happening in our neighborhoods and families is the result of putting someone in charge of the country’s public health infrastructure who doesn't understand medicine, and who doesn’t trust science or experts.

I care deeply about public health as a physician, as a mom, and as a human being. And I know exactly what vaccine misinformation costs — not in dollars, but in people's lives.

Before the measles vaccine, hundreds of children used to die every year from measles, thousands were hospitalized, and many suffered lifelong consequences. This new outbreak has already tragically cost two unvaccinated school-aged children their lives.

We don’t have to go back to a time when kids were dying from a disease that modern medicine solved decades ago. We just need leaders who trust doctors and believe in science over conspiracy theories.

I will continue fighting the disinformation coming from Trump and RFK Jr, and I could really use you by my side — because the more voices we can add to the chorus, the more likely it is we will make a real impact.
