Dear John
Last night, police unlawfully blocked around 200 Extinction Rebellion protesters from leaving Lambeth Bridge - and arrested every one of them.
These rebels were not planning to get arrested. They were not given any warning by the police, and were detained despite chanting ‘We want to leave!’. We are seeking legal advice on what action to take.
Arrest can be frightening. And for those rebels, the story doesn’t end with release from a police cell. The Arrestee and Legal Support team is here to help.
We try to ensure every charged rebel can get advice from a specialist solicitor, so they don’t go through the ordeal alone. Can you support our legal crowdfunder?
I felt so inspired by 92-year-old John Lynes, on day one of Rebellion, once again getting arrested for daring to care about our future. When arrested last year, John said:
‘It’s a lot easier for an old boy like me with a pension and everything to get arrested and even go to prison than somebody who has just got married, is trying to pay off the mortgage, look after the kids, maybe even lose their job.'
As we approach the weekend, over 500 brave rebels have put their liberty on the line to draw attention to the climate emergency.
