John, it’s Mary Trump.

Five years ago, after the attack on the Capitol, I said my uncle was unstable and needed to be removed from office immediately.

I was right then, and the case is only more clear now.

I’ve made this argument as a clinical psychologist, as his niece, and as someone who grew up watching exactly how people in my family wield power. My opinion as to whether Donald is capable of doing the job of the presidency has never wavered, and the evidence should be even more obvious to anyone willing to look.

Consider what we’ve all watched recently. Donald calls foreign leaders by the wrong names. He invents countries that don’t exist. He cannot stay awake through his own meetings. His hands are bruised, his ankles are swollen, and he has no impulse control.

Here’s the part I most need you to understand: Donald isn’t a different person. His cognitive, psychological, and physical decline are simply revealing who he’s always been.

Meanwhile, the people constitutionally empowered to act — his Cabinet, his party — are painfully aware of his unfitness even as they work to cover it up. They have decided that their own hold on power is worth more to them than the country’s safety or the rights of the people they purport to serve. They will not act on their own.

So the responsibility falls to us, and the only real remedy available to us is an electoral one. We are less than three months from Election Day, and what we build between now and then will determine whether this man spends his final two years in office with a Congress that indulges him or one that finally holds him to account.
