Good morning,

With the country currently in recession and the economy having a mountain to climb, as our research director Duncan Simpson wrote recently in the Daily Express ([link removed]) , we believe now is the time to do everything possible to support British businesses.

That’s why the TaxPayers’ Alliance is running the ‘Rate Expectations’ ([link removed]) campaign.

The government has opened a consultation on business rates ([link removed]) and we are leading the charge to help high streets in hard times. Calls for an online sales tax are misguided and won't get business rates down. It’s time for a new system which keeps the multiplier low and allows regular revaluations, including the right to appeal during a recession. That’s what our campaign calls for, and it matters more than ever!

If we are going to win this battle, it’s critical that the government gets as many clear responses supporting business rate reform as possible. The consultation asks very specific questions and, in order to be counted, responses must be specific as well.

That’s why we’ve designed a handy online tool ([link removed]) to make it easy for you to submit a response, and tell the politicians and bureaucrats in Whitehall exactly how business rates affect your firm or your high street.

We need your help.

Filling out the online form only takes a minute or two, but every response will pile on the pressure. These consultations usually slip under the radar, allowing government to pass the buck on reform. Without your voice, bureaucrats will once again conclude that change isn’t needed.

Please help us take a stand. The consultation closes in two weeks; send your submission before it's too late! ([link removed])

It matters more than ever.

Thank you,
John O'Connell
