People Who Made America Great

Betsy Ross

Betsy Ross

Betsy Ross (1752–1836) – Credited by popular legend with sewing the first American flag, Betsy Ross has become an enduring symbol of patriotism and the contributions of women to the Revolutionary cause. A skilled upholsterer and businesswoman, she supported the war effort by producing flags, tents, and uniforms for the Continental Army. While historical evidence of her creating the first flag is debated, her role as a craftsman and patriot is undisputed. Ross remained a dedicated supporter of American independence throughout her life. Her story continues to inspire those who value determination, service, and national pride.

According to Ross family tradition, Washington visited Betsy’s upholstery shop in Philadelphia with two members of the Continental Congress and asked her to make a flag for the new nation. Betsy reportedly suggested changing the stars in the proposed design from six-pointed to five-pointed because they were easier to cut—and then demonstrated how to do it with a single snip. The men were impressed, and she was given the task. While historians debate the accuracy of this tale, since the first written account didn’t appear until nearly a century later, it remains a cherished part of America's heritage and identity.
