[link removed] [[link removed]]In 2025, the median wait for a DACA renewal was 15 days. By February of this year it was 70 days - an increase of more than 400%.
Nationwide, roughly 54,000 renewals are sitting in limbo right now.
Right now, my office is handling the highest volume of immigration casework I have seen in my entire time in Congress. A firefighter, a radiation technology technician, a teacher. All of them follow the rules. All of them are waiting; 4-6 weeks at a minimum.
One San Diego woman who managed 150 people applied three months early, heard nothing, and lost her job - along with about $25,000 in unvested stock and bonuses.
Nearly 9,000 DACA recipients call San Diego home. They work here, they pay taxes here, and for most of them this country is the only one they have ever known - the average recipient is 33 and has lived here for 27 years. Dreamers contribute an estimated $968 million to San Diego's economy every year.
And this is not a close call with the public: a recent poll reported 81% of Americans - including 56% of Republicans - support giving Dreamers a path to citizenship.
I spoke out when Donald Trump attacked DACA the first time. I am still speaking out, because our work is not over. And we still do not have answers to the simplest questions: how does this administration plan to clear the backlog it created - and are DACA recipients being detained because of the lag?
