Wentworth Improvements
*Wentworth Park Improvements*

*Wentworth Park Basketball Court Expansion*

The City will be expanding the basketball court at Wentworth Park from a half court to a full court by expanding the concrete pad and adding a second hoop. The project will provide additional recreational opportunities for residents of all ages while enhancing the existing park amenity. The expansion also includes improved drainage to help keep the court dry during the playing season while still allowing the adjacent pleasure rink to be flooded for winter skating. Construction is anticipated to begin the week of August 17.

*Wentworth Park Hockey Board Replacement*

The hockey rink boards surrounding the skating rink at Wentworth Park will be replaced as part of the City's 2026 Capital Improvement Program. The project includes replacing the existing boards and support system to improve safety and extend the life of the rink. Construction is expected to begin in late August or early September. Because the pickleball courts are located within the hockey rink, they will be temporarily closed during construction.

The Mendota Heights Fire Department celebrated its newest full firefighters at a badge pinning ceremony on Aug. 5, marking their official move from rookie trainees to full members of the department.

Earning that badge takes more than a year of hard work. After being hired, each recruit completes a full year of training and passes a series of tests before becoming a full firefighter. 

Please join us in congratulating Joseph Fitzgerald, John Samec, Rachel Miller, Christopher Jones, and Nicholas Segl, and thank them for their commitment to keeping our community safe!

RivertoRiver
River to River Greenway (Valley Park Trail)

The River to River Greenway has been undergoing improvements for the past year. Repairs are underway after the late June water main break.

* *Week of Aug. 10:* Finish placement of gravel base and topsoil 
* *Tuesday, Aug. 18:* Asphalt paving
* *Week of Aug. 24:* Pavement markings and signs

The contractor will also finish fencing, topsoil, seeding, and the pedestrian ramp and patching. Tree plantings can be done later this fall when it's cooler, after the trail opens.

Municipal Campus Building Project [ [link removed] ]
Municipal Campus Building Project 

At the August 5 City Council meeting, the City Council considered a motion to expand the Municipal Campus project scope and budget to include an additional building schematic design. The motion did not pass. As a result, the City will continue advancing the existing schematic design through the design development phase.

The City Council is continuing to review opportunities to reduce the project's square footage to help lower overall costs while evaluating how to incorporate the requirements associated with the $4 million in State bonding funds awarded for the project. These details will continue to be refined as the design progresses.

Creeping Bellflower
Weed of the Month – Creeping Bellflower ("Campanula rapunculoides")

Creeping bellflower is a showy, 3-5' tall perennial with many purple bell-shaped flowers along a single spike, usually on just one side, and blooms in mid-summer. Creeping bellflower has alternate, lanceolate, toothed leaves. It is often spotted in ditches and open areas, and along woodland edges. It is a prolific seed producer, producing upwards of 15,000 seeds per plant, and also spreads via horizontal rhizomes, making it difficult to control. Creeping bellflower often invades mesic forests and woodland edges. Its roots are tuberous rhizomes, which makes it difficult to hand-pull. Minnesota does have a native bellflower (American bellflower or "Campanula americana"), which can be differentiated by its bluish-purple flowers that grow on both sides of the plant.

Creeping bellflower is native to Europe and western Asia. It was introduced as a garden ornamental and spread into natural areas.

To prevent the spread of this invasive:


* The best control is to remove small populations before they have a chance to spread. When removing by hand, dig out as much of the root system as possible.
* Small populations can also be cut back and then smothered by covering the plants and area with layers of newspaper sheets, covered with soil and mulch. They can also be smothered using black plastic, which must remain in place for the entire growing season, and then can be removed.
* Large populations can be treated with an herbicide in the fall when native plants have gone dormant but the rosettes of creeping bellflower are still green. Always follow manufacturer directions and only apply in favorable conditions (calm winds, with no precipitation in the forecast).
