# Williams Institute receives a 2026 Data Integrity Award

([link removed])

We are honored to announce that the Association of Public Data Users (APDU) has awarded the Williams Institute and the
Movement Advancement Project ([link removed])
(MAP) a 2026 Data Integrity Award for our collaborative work tracking and preserving sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data that has been removed from federal data collections since January 2025.

On the first day of his second term, President Donald Trump issued an executive order stating that the federal government would no longer recognize transgender, nonbinary, and intersex people. As a result, more than 365 federal data collections have removed at least one sexual orientation or gender identity (SOGI) measure, according to our recent
report and interactive tracker ([link removed]).

The APDU Data Integrity Awards recognize work that is committed to advancing the responsible stewardship, dissemination, and use of public data. The Williams Institute also collaborated with MAP, dataindex.us, the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), and the Data Rescue Project to track data and create an archive preserving federal datasets that include SOGI measures -- ensuring these data remain accessible to researchers, policymakers, and advocates even after they are removed from federal websites.

"We are grateful to APDU for this award and for uplifting the importance of reliable and accessible public data," said Lauren Bouton, Peter J. Cooper Policy Fellow and Research Data Analyst who leads our federal data tracking and preservation efforts. "Federal SOGI data are essential for understanding LGBTQ populations and addressing the known disparities they face in health, economics, and exposure to violence."
