For years, supporters of electoral reform have been told to wait.

Wait for the right political moment. Wait for the right leader. Wait until Proportional Representation moves from the margins into the mainstream.

Well, that moment is finally here.

Andy Burnham has publicly backed proportional voting. He’s spoken about the need to change Britain’s electoral system, and he now has the power to put that principle into practice.

We have a real opportunity that didn’t exist before.

The opening months of a new government matter enormously. Priorities are set, promises become plans, and decisions are made about what will define the years ahead.

Electoral reform has to be one of them, to restore faith in politics and ensure every voice is heard.

We’ve been working hard, building public support, and taking the voices of thousands of people directly to the Prime Minister, making the case that democracy deserves a place at the heart of his government’s agenda.

We’re not starting from scratch. Andy Burnham has already opened the door. Our job now is to make sure it stays open, and to give him every reason to walk through it.

That means showing that people across Britain want a democracy where every vote counts, where governments reflect how people actually voted, free of dark money and vested interests, and where millions of people no longer feel their voice makes little difference.

Moments like this don’t come around often.
