SCREEN Act Fails To Advance Out of Senate Committee
The federal SCREEN Act failed to advance out of the Senate Commerce Committee on Aug. 5 after the committee was unable to reach quorum. In the lead-up to the vote, we met with Congressional offices, submitted formal opposition letters and mobilized our members and allies, generating thousands of calls and emails to lawmakers. The outcome is a significant win in our fight against censorship and surveillance, but the work continues. Pornhub Sends Letter To U.S. Lawmakers About 'Ineffective' Age Verification
“According to the Free Speech Coalition, ‘Less than 5% of consumers actually go through with age-verification for adult content. When confronted with a request for a facial scan and government ID, most consumers simply hit the back button and find a non-compliant site outside the mandate or log on to a VPN.’ The internet is global and it's impossible to patrol millions of different sites based in hundreds of different countries. Senate Committee Advances KOSA Over Sen. Mike Lee's SCREEN Act
“The SCREEN Act's failure to advance is welcomed news for many adult entertainment industry advocates. Alison Boden, the executive director of the Free Speech Coalition (FSC), told AVN that this was a positive development. ‘FSC is very happy that the SCREEN Act did not have the votes to pass out of committee this morning,’ Boden said.’ We’re grateful to the thousands of industry members who came out in opposition to this bill,’ she added. ‘Their voices made a difference. YouTube Bans Popular ASMR Artists, Accusing Them Of Making 'Sexually Gratifying' Content
YouTube removed several prominent ASMR creators this week for alleged violations of its sexual content policies, wiping out channels with years of content and hundreds of thousands of subscribers. YouTube says the channels were terminated for linking to content that violates its nudity and sexual content policy, while affected creators say their YouTube videos were nonsexual and, in some cases, any adult content they produced was kept separate from the platform. The bans highlight ongoing concerns about vague sexual content policies and how creators can lose access to their audiences, income and years of work with little warning or recourse. Free Porn Back In Texas? Lawmakers Mum As State Blocks Challenged
Two years after Texas implemented its age-verification law, questions remain about its effectiveness as many adult sites reportedly continue to operate without verification. In an open letter to lawmakers, Pornhub argued that site-by-site age verification is ineffective and easily circumvented, pointing to unregulated sites and VPN use. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has continued enforcement against individual platforms, including a recent legal victory against Kick Online Entertainment. Pornhub is instead calling for device-based solutions that would allow parents to restrict minors’ access to adult content without requiring adults to verify their identity on individual websites.
