91 years ago today, the Social Security Act was signed into law by Franklin D. Roosevelt.
It was built on a simple promise: After a lifetime of hard work, Americans deserve to retire with dignity.
For generations Social Security has helped seniors pay their bills, stay in their homes, and afford the rising cost of living.
But not everyone has stood by that promise.
John Sununu has spent years trying to cut the safety net that seniors rely on as they transition into retirement – while telling voters another story.
Sununu is a leading architect of the plan to privatize Social Security. He introduced the Social Security Personal Savings Guarantee and Prosperity Act twice.His legislation would’ve redirected seniors’ hard-earned Social Security benefits into private accounts susceptible to Wall Street volatility.
One analysis found that a worker retiring on October 1, 2008, after 35 years of contributions, could have lost approximately $26,000 under Sununu’s proposed plan.
That’s not protecting Social Security.
New Hampshire seniors deserve a senator who will fight for them – not one who will put their benefits at risk. And unlike my opponent, I know the struggle that Granite Staters face every day.
Our seniors are struggling to make ends meet and wondering if they’ll be able to afford the retirement they worked so hard for.
I’m proud to have earned the endorsement of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security & Medicare PAC. And during my time in Congress, I’ve fought to strengthen Social Security benefits, maintain the retirement age, and make sure Wall Street doesn’t have a say in Americans’ retirement security.
91 years ago today, our country made a promise to the American people.
Unlike John Sununu I intend to keep that promise.
