The COVID-19 Crisis Underscores the Need for Sustainable Domestic Worker Protections

Dear Friends —

On this Labor Day, we choose to celebrate domestic workers who are essential workers today and have been throughout history. These workers, predominantly immigrants and women of color, have been severely impacted by COVID-19 as they work on the frontlines of this pandemic. We’re excited to share our new policy brief that highlights the integral role domestic workers play in the care economy and the critical need for stronger labor protections for these workers, particularly during the pandemic.

Our brief, The COVID-19 Crisis Underscores the Need for Sustainable Domestic Worker Protections:

  • Provides an overview of how systemic racism and sexism in public policy has limited the rights and benefits of domestic workers;
  • Illustrates the severe implications the ongoing pandemic has had on domestic and care work using survey data from the National Domestic Worker Alliance (NDWA); and
  • Details the necessity of comprehensive protections and rights for domestic workers through policy solutions like the Domestic Worker Bill of Rights.

As we reflect on the achievements and contributions of workers around the United States this Labor Day, let’s remember to celebrate the workers who play a vital role supporting our families and homes.
