No invented match. No manufactured deadline. Just the truth.

A letter from JD Vance
John,
I want to start by apologizing to you. Not for anything I’ve done — for what
this business has done to you.
I’m sorry for the emails promising that your $25 will be multiplied a thousand
times over.
I’m sorry for the countdown clocks that expire at midnight and reset by
morning.
I’m sorry for the letters that show up every two years talking about your
town, and stop the week after the election.
If you’ve stopped believing any of it, I don’t think you’re cynical. I think
you’re paying attention.
Let me tell you where I’m coming from.
I grew up in Middletown, Ohio. It was a steel town. My mother struggled with
addiction for most of my childhood, and my grandmother raised me. Nobody at
that kitchen table was waiting on a politician to come save us — there wasn’t
that kind of faith left in the house.
But I’ll tell you what we did notice. Every single one who came through and
lied about trying. They’d turn up when the plant was closing, say the right
words about jobs, get the photograph, and we’d never see them again. People
where I’m from learned to read that pattern the way you read weather.
So I understand the instinct to delete this email. I’d have deleted it too.
Here’s the part where I’m supposed to tell you I’m different.
I’m not going to do that. I work in Washington now. I know you’ve heard “this
one’s different” before. You have every reason to assume I’m the same as the
rest of them, and I’m not going to argue you out of it in an email. I’d rather
be straight with you and let you decide for yourself.
So here is the only promise I’ll make: I’ll tell you the truth, including the
parts you don’t want to hear. That’s it. That’s the whole promise. No invented
match. No manufactured deadline. No pretending that a $20 donation is a test of
whether you love your country.
And before I ask you for anything, I want to ask you for something harder.
Tell me the truth back.
TELL ME STRAIGHT — 60 SECONDS

Five blunt questions. Whether you trust any of us. Whether you stopped giving,
and why. What we’d actually have to do to earn it back. I read the results —
the real ones, not the flattering summary somebody prepares for me.
Thank you for getting this far, John. You didn’t have to. Most people won’t,
and I don’t blame them.
Now the part I owe you honesty about.
The Republican National Committee needs money. That’s true of every party
committee, and anyone who tells you otherwise is doing the exact thing I just
apologized for. So I’m not going to dress it up.
If you can’t give right now, don’t. Groceries cost what they cost. I’m not
going to make you feel guilty over a number.
But if you want to back it up, I’d be honored to earn it — and you ought to be
able to see exactly where it goes. So we itemized it. An actual receipt, not a
promise.

That’s the whole pitch. No countdown, no multiplier, no manufactured emergency.
