First, he tried to add a census question that all the experts warned would result in an undercount; one that had been suggested by the “Michaelangelo of gerrymandering” in order to advantage “Republicans and non-Hispanic whites” -- that's the exact phrase that appeared in the memo. Alongside advocates and Attorneys General, I pushed back, and we stopped him in the Supreme Court.

After his first attempt at rigging the census failed, he then requested last month an order that any undocumented immigrants be excluded from the overall count. This is illegal — the Constitution demands the census count every person in the country — not every person likely to vote for Donald Trump.

And when the Census Bureau asked for an extension, the request was ignored by Senate Republicans and President Trump. Now, the census deadline has been shortened. The census may not be accurate. That spells disaster.
