Thirty-five generations ago, my ancestors built lives in the high desert of New Mexico. Growing up fishing with my dad and running through the desert with my cousins, I fell in love with New Mexico’s natural wonders and learned that we all have a responsibility to care for our planet.

Since my childhood, I have seen the impacts of climate change on New Mexico.

That’s why, when I was elected to Congress, I fought to protect sacred lands. As Secretary of the Interior, I helped protect more land and water than any administration in U.S. history while also creating good jobs in clean energy, conservation, and cleaning up legacy pollution.

But now all of that progress is at risk.

Donald Trump and his MAGA allies have worked to gut environmental protections and sell off public lands — all while New Mexico stands on the front lines of the devastating impacts of climate change.

Governors are the first line of defense against the Trump agenda, especially when it comes to standing up against the brazen attacks on our environment. And as Governor, I will be a fierce defender of our home, but I can’t win this race on my own.

Republicans have already spent big to stop us because they care more about money than about protecting New Mexico’s families and the beautiful public lands we call home.
