Rampant antibiotic overuse on factory farms is putting public health at risk. In industrial livestock operations, animals are routinely flooded with antibiotics not to treat illness, but for disease prevention in crowded, filthy conditions.

The result is deadly. Abusing antibiotics leads to more antibiotic-resistant bacteria and illnesses, causing 35,000 deaths and over two million illnesses in the U.S. every year and threatening to render these miracle drugs ineffective.

That’s why we joined allies to petition the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to crack down on factory farm antibiotic abuses. FDA is accepting comments on the petition now and needs to hear from you.

Join us in urging the FDA to ban the use of antibiotics on the farm except to treat sick or injured animals or control diagnosed outbreaks of disease. ([link removed])

Over time, bacteria that are constantly exposed to antibiotics on factory farms can become resistant. When these antibiotic-resistant bacteria spread to humans through our food supply, via animal-to-human transmission on farms, or through contaminated waste, they can cause serious or even deadly infections that are harder to treat.

The FDA has known about this misuse of antibiotics since the 1970s, but has not required factory farms to stop this dangerous practice.
