CfA's September 3, 2020 Newsletter
Thank you for your continued support of CfA. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we are still working to hold the powerful accountable.
Our Latest Work:
- Apple’s Dirty Gold Problem: This week CfA and TTP released a report revealing that Apple has long relied on gold suppliers linked to money laundering and other illegal activity. Apple has won praise from some activists for doing more than its corporate peers to halt the trade of conflict minerals, but a closer look at its supply chain reveals several questionable connections.
- Demand Fake Clinics Return PPP Loans: We also joined Abortion Access Front and Daily Kos in demanding that these fake clinics return their COVID-19 PPP loans. Fake clinic networks Heartbeat International and Obria were both recipients of this aid, while actual healthcare provider Planned Parenthood was forced to give back $60 million because of the Title X “gag rule” implemented in 2019.

What We're Reading:
- Facebook will block new political advertising the week before Election Day: “Facebook plans to block new advertising the week before the presidential election — the first time the company has taken action to limit political advertising in the United States, the company said Thursday. The move to limit ads, part of a spate of election-related announcements, is an attempt to combat efforts to suppress voting and reduce misinformation that is expected to flood social networks as Election Day draws near.” (Washington Post, September 3)
- How Facebook Failed Kenosha: "Despite Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s previous statements that the company had removed a militia event where people discussed gathering in Kenosha, Wisconsin, to shoot and kill protesters, the company never took any such action, BuzzFeed News has learned. The event was taken down by the militia group itself after two people were killed." (Buzzfeed News, September 3)
- Ted Cruz and a Bunch of GOP Senators Are Trying to Ban the Abortion Pill: "Sen. Ted Cruz is leading the charge on a Hail Mary plea to the Food and Drug and Administration: He wants the agency to cut off access to a pill that’s used in nearly 40% of U.S. abortions." (VICE News, September 2)
