Last month was quite eventful for us. In case you missed it, here’s a recap of all that took place in August:

Advancement Project National Office endorsed a proposed amendment to the constitution enshrining an affirmative right to vote for all people. The amendment, introduced by Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), guarantees the fundamental right to vote of every citizen of the United States of legal voting age and requires courts to treat it as such.

Sign our petition and stay tuned as we build a national campaign to win the #RightToVote Amendment. Learn about our work leading up to this moment here.

Our Immigrant Justice team is working with La ColectiVA, Sanctuary DMV, Detention Watch Network (DWN), and the National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC) to free all people in ICA-Farmville Detention Center, and to shut it down for good. We released a white paper and infographics highlighting the deplorable conditions.

Our Justice Project team is also continuing to fight for the release of community members in jail in East Baton Rouge.

We filed a with the Center for Constitutional Rights, The Fair Fight Initiative, Hogan Lovells LLP, and local civil rights attorneys in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana, arguing that East Baton Rouge Parish officials are violating the constitutional rights of people in the jail by exposing them to risk of infection, illness and death during the coronavirus pandemic.

In order to get people released from jails and prisons, we know that it’s imperative to educate others on the significance of sheriffs’ elections. Advancement Project National Office, Dream Defenders and New Florida Majority hosted a webinar on the power and role of sheriffs in Florida and how sheriffs impact the school-to-prison pipeline.

If you missed it, take a look at and share our infographic explaining the role of sheriffs and how YOU can make a difference in voting in more progressive leaders that get us closer to a more #FreeAndSafe society for people of color.

Finally, we, along with our national allies Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum, Can’t Stop! Won’t Stop! Consulting, Demos, and The Opportunity Agenda released Map The Truth, a COVID-19/Coronavirus Social Justice Guide. This guide is a reflection of the love, unity and uplifting positivity that we collectively aim to spread amongst all impacted communities.
