Margaret Thatcher

Margaret Thatcher (1925–2013) – As Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990, Margaret Thatcher was one of America's closest and strongest allies during the final decade of the Cold War. Nicknamed the "Iron Lady" for her unflinching leadership and conservative reforms, she shared a deep ideological bond with President Ronald Reagan—both believing in free markets, strong national defense, and the moral fight against communism. Thatcher stood firm during the Falklands War, reduced the power of British labor unions, and helped transform the British economy from stagnation to growth. Her partnership with Reagan was crucial in challenging the Soviet Union and promoting Western values of liberty and self-determination.

Though not an American, her legacy looms large in U.S. political culture, where she remains a symbol of courage, conviction, and principled leadership. In 1987, Thatcher delivered a historic speech to the Conservative Party conference warning about the dangers of centralized European power—foreshadowing debates that would later culminate in Brexit. Her warning that “you cannot buck the market” became a defining phrase in economic conservatism and was frequently quoted by American conservatives who opposed big-government solutions.
