Why support Pramila, John?
Because when immigrant children are being separated from their parents, she isn’t sitting on the sidelines. She’s fighting back.
As Ranking Member of the House Immigration Subcommittee, Pramila has made protecting immigrant families and holding ICE accountable a central part of her work in Congress.
She’s gone into detention centers to meet directly with people being held by ICE, even when officials tried to stop her.
She’s held shadow hearings to expose what’s happening to immigrant children and families, including her series Kidnapped and Disappeared of 8 hearings featuring witness testimony from affected communities and attorneys representing detained immigrants.
And she’s introduced legislation to hold ICE accountable and make sure detained parents have a say in what happens to their children.
That includes Orlin’s Law that would prevent ICE from detaining or deporting primary caregivers unless they pose a specific threat, the Dignity for Detained Immigrants Act that would end mandatory detention, prohibit the jailing of children, and end the use of for-profit detention centers, the PROTECT Immigration Act that would stop local police from being used to act as federal immigration agents, and the LIFT the BAR Act which would remove strict five-year waiting periods and allow lawfully present immigrants to access essential federal programs.
This isn’t abstract for Pramila. She knows what it means to build a life in this country. Pramila came to the United States from India at 16 and has spent more than two decades fighting for working families, immigrants, and communities that too often get left behind.
And right now, with the future of our immigration system and our communities on the line, we need leaders willing to stand up and fight. That’s what Pramila has always done. And in this upcoming election, we need to make sure voters know exactly what’s at stake.
Pramila isn’t just talking about progressive values, she’s putting them into action.
