*Homestead Credit Refund deadline approaches for Minnesota homeowners *
The Minnesota Department of Revenue reminds homeowners that the deadline to file for a Homestead Credit Refund is August 15. Claims for the 2024 credit expire on August 15, 2026. The 2025 credit, which includes a one-time 15% increase that was passed by lawmakers and signed into law by Governor Tim Walz earlier this year, is available until August 2027, and homeowners are encouraged to file now to take advantage of the larger refund.
Eligible homeowners can use the department’s free electronic filing system [ [link removed] ] to file for their Homestead Credit Refund.
Nearly 600,000 homeowners claim the Homestead Credit Refund each year, with an average credit of more than $1,330.

* *"Include all information."* Homeowners should make sure to use the information from their property tax statements issued by their county each spring.
* *"Track your refund."* Homeowners can track where their refund is in the process by using the "Where’s My Refund?" system [ [link removed] ]. The system will show which stage the refund is in and whether any action is required to complete processing. Homeowners will see the date the refund was issued when it is finished processing.
* *"Property tax relief for senior citizens."* The Senior Citizens’ Property Tax Deferral Program allows seniors whose property taxes are high relative to their incomes an option to stay in their homes by deferring a portion of the property taxes they owe each year. If they are currently in the program, qualified seniors may claim a property tax refund and it will apply to their outstanding loan balance. Each tax return is different, and the department reviews every return to verify the information on the return. Some returns may take longer to review and process than others.
