Things looked bleak. 

The Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act. MAGA Governor Jeff Landry canceled our congressional elections to jam through a map that erased one of our majority-Black districts. 

But then something happened that MAGA didn’t see coming. Louisiana rose up and fought back. In May, voters rejected every single Landry-backed constitutional amendment by double digits. GOP Senator Bill Cassidy became the first incumbent senator in 14 years to lose his own primary. 

So we hit the road to keep the momentum going.

We launched No More Silence: Road to the Polls, an 18-city tour to register voters, recruit No Party voters, and make sure every Louisianian knows how, when, and where to vote. The tour ended this weekend at our annual Masquerade Sneaker Ball, where Vice President Kamala Harris took the stage.

“Louisiana, you are ground zero,” she told the crowd.

Kamala is right. What happens here decides whether or not MAGA gets away with a brazen assault on the rights of black voters in this state and across the nation. What they can get away with here, they will ship across the country.

And Kamala did not mince words about what it will take to stop them. Democrats need to get comfortable with what she called "a certain kind of ruthlessness." Not cruelty, she was careful to say. But the kind that refuses to back down from injustice.

That’s why our fight is so important not just Louisiana, but for Democrats everywhere. We have just 85 days until the midterm elections. We need to knock doors. We need to call voters. We need to register voters. We need to turn this energy into the largest blue wave Louisiana has ever seen.
