My name is Rebecca Bennett. I'm a former Navy helicopter pilot and Democratic nominee in New Jersey's 7th Congressional District, one of the most competitive red-to-blue races in the country.

It's been over a year since we launched this campaign, and the response has been incredible. Every day, I'm amazed at how far we've come. Especially considering where it all started.

My decision to run came right after Trump had won the presidential election for the second time. I was standing in my bathroom, talking to my husband, when a switch inside my head flipped.

No one was coming to save us from this reality. We were going to have to save ourselves.

I realized then that there were people having this exact conversation all across the country — people getting ready to step up. I got goosebumps.

I thought about the complacent "leader" my neighbors and I had to look to in this time of crisis – my now opponent, Tom Kean Jr. – and I said, no way. I'm getting in the ring.

You see, I'm the kind of person who runs at problems. I'm also someone who loves this country. It's why I served in the Navy for over a decade, and why now, I'm ready to serve again.

I believe in the promise of America. I believe it can be a country our kids are proud of. We don't just have to accept the direction we're heading. We can do something about it.
