Listen — if
you'd told me as a kid I'd grow up to run for governor, I would've laughed
at you.
That wasn't in the cards for a kid like me. It never even crossed my mind.
My dad stocked shelves at Safeway. My mom worked odd jobs before she found
her way into the postal service. We worked hard, and we still struggled. I
remember one night, all my brother and I had for dinner was a stale candy
bar — a Skor bar, to be exact.
[ Aaron's ]Aaron's Skor barI still keep one on my desk today. Not to eat it. Just
so I never forget where I come from.
Programs like food stamps, Medicaid, and WIC kept my family standing when
we needed it most. They're the reason I made it through school. Not
despite the government investing in us — because of it.
That's what's so infuriating about watching MAGA Gov. Joe Lombardo help
gut those same programs. He's siding with billionaire donors and special
interests while Nevada families are struggling.
Our government shouldn't exist to please corporations while working people
barely scrape by. I’m a living, breathing example of what can happen to
someone when their government has their back.
Those programs allowed me to go on to earn five degrees, teach math in a
public school classroom, and become Nevada's first Black Attorney General.
None of that happens without that crucial support.
As governor, that's exactly what I intend to do for Nevadans — invest in
them, the way this country once invested in me.
