This week, history was made in a Georgia courtroom.

Colin Gray was sentenced to 15 years in prison after being convicted of
second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. He had purchased an
assault rifle for his 14-year-old son — a weapon the teenager used to take
four innocent lives at Apalachee High School: Mason Schermerhorn,
Christian Angulo, Richard Aspinwall, and Cristina Irimie.

During the sentencing, the judge pointed out the clear reality: the
warning lights were flashing, yet the guns remained accessible. As Mason’s
mother, Maria Schermerhorn, courageously shared in court: "I could not
control every choice my children would eventually make, but I was
responsible for controlling what I put into their hands."

This verdict marks a monumental step for accountability in America. It
sends an unmistakable message that facilitating access to lethal weapons
when red flags are flying carries severe, life-altering consequences.

But accountability after a tragedy can never replace prevention before one
occurs.

No courtroom sentence can bring back the students and teachers we lost,
nor can it fully erase the trauma endured by survivors and families.
Justice in court is essential, but our ultimate goal must always be a
world where these massacres never happen in the first place.

security, and hold both weapon manufacturers and negligent adults
accountable long before a trigger is pulled.
