14-year-old Aws al-Nasaan was outside his school in Al-Mughayyir, in the occupied West Bank, when an armed Israeli settler opened fire. Bullets struck the school wall. Aws fell to the ground as his classmates cried out for help.
He died there, in broad daylight. Then the Israeli army fired tear gas at students.
Aws should be alive today. School shootings like this are a devastating consequence of allowing violent settlers to terrorize Palestinian communities with impunity. Violent Israeli settlers and the IDF soldiers that protect and enable them must be held accountable.

I witnessed that impunity firsthand. Armed Israeli settlers carrying American-made M4 rifles blocked my delegation’s vehicle in the West Bank. When IDF officers arrived, they backed the settlers and continued blocking our way.
