We are already experiencing the devastating effects of climate change. Just this week, Hurricane Laura took the life of 15 Louisianans. This summer, during the hottest days, Baltimore residents couldn’t turn on their air conditioners because they’d lost power. These residents live in one of the city’s hardest-hit neighborhoods of the coronavirus pandemic.
Jess is centering climate justice in her platform because she understands that those affected most by climate change are our most vulnerable. Here’s what she plans to do:
- Repair the disproportionate environmental damage done in Indigenous, Black and other communities of color
- Enact Medicare for All and fully fund community health centers in areas most affected by climate change and corporate pollution
- Invest in public power, so that the people own their utilities, not corporations
- Enact the Green New Deal and transform our energy system to end the extraction of — and dependence on — fossil fuels
