Gavin Newsom, AWOL: Hard At Work Trying To Get WH Job
My latest California Post column looks at Gavin Newsom’s newly released official calendars — and what they reveal about a governor increasingly focused on the job he wants next.
For months, Californians have watched Newsom build his national profile, court national media, promote his memoir and position himself for a likely presidential campaign.
Now we have a better look at how he is spending his time as governor.
The California Post obtained Newsom’s official calendars for the first four months of this year after a three-month fight for the records. What they show raises some obvious questions about how much of the governor’s attention California is actually getting.
There are weekdays marked “no official business.” Large chunks of vaguely defined “WORK TIME.” Redacted entries. And some surprisingly short official workdays.
Newsom’s office says the calendars do not capture everything he does. Fair enough.
But the calendars also show something else: When Newsom wants to devote substantial time to something, he certainly can.
In my full California Post column, I dig into where that time appears to be going, the extraordinary effort required simply to obtain these public records, and why Newsom’s approach to transparency looks increasingly familiar.
The issue isn’t whether Gavin Newsom worked enough hours on any particular Tuesday.
It’s whether governing California is still his full-time job — or whether being governor has become the platform from which he auditions for his next one.
