Webinar: Real Teacher Appreciation--Let's Talk About It!

Calling all teachers! Public Schools First NC invites you to spend an hour
with teacher educator Dr. Amelia Wheeler and NCAE President Christina Cole
(both former teachers) to discuss the importance of teacher wellness and
self-care. They will review current research on this topic, related
programs, and policies, and lead an honest dialogue about how to help
educators maintain their health, manage workplace stress, and prevent
burnout. Registration is required.

Dr. Amelia H. Wheeler is an assistant professor of curriculum and
instruction and a former high school teacher whose research examines
teacher well-being, school funding, and the policies shaping public
education. She currently leads a community-based oral history project
capturing how educators across Western North Carolina responded to
Hurricane Helene. Drawing on both research and powerful firsthand accounts,
Dr. Wheeler argues that investing in public schools benefits both
individuals and communities. Her work highlights clear evidence that
well-funded schools improve student outcomes, teacher retention, and
community development, while voucher programs fail to deliver results and
deepen inequality. She also emphasizes the critical role schools play as
community anchors—stepping up as hubs of care, stability, and even disaster
response when communities need them most.

Christina Cole is from rural western NC, a Wake County special education
teacher, union organizer and proud president of the North Carolina
Association of Educators (NCAE). The NCAE is leading the way with their
[7]Kids Over Corporations campaign, demanding that politicians put kids
first by raising per student spending to the national average and ending
private school vouchers and tax breaks for the rich. President Cole and
thousands of union members across the state are ready to unionize our
public schools, win real improvements for our students and educators, and
defeat the privatizers who seek to dismantle public schools. Christina is
currently pursuing a PhD in Cultural Foundations from UNC-Greensboro,
studying a critical pedagogy of wholeness.
