Two years later, the next leader of the CCP, Deng Xiaoping, admitted it himself: Mao was human, and the Cultural Revolution had been "a mistake." My entire belief system collapsed overnight.
So I did the only thing I knew how to do. I studied.
I fought my way through a brutal, three-day national exam and earned a spot at one of China's top law schools, determined to help my country move from rule by men to rule of law.
It wasn't until college that an American exchange student handed me a pocket copy of the Constitution. That moment changed everything. I realized real rights don't come from the government; they come from God, and no regime can take them away.
I came to America with a suitcase and almost nothing else. I will never stop fighting to protect this country that saved me from the horrors of my upbringing.
