John,
I recently joined Congresswoman Ilhan Omar to conduct congressional
oversight at an ICE detention facility in Minnesota.
We went because the American people deserve to know what is happening
behind those walls — and because every person, regardless of their
immigration status, deserves to be treated with dignity and humanity.
What we found was deeply disturbing:
* We were not allowed to speak with the people being detained. In fact,
we were required to sign paperwork agreeing that we would not interact
with them.
* When we asked simple questions regarding training and policy, we were
met with hostility from agents.
* Inside, I saw people being held in leg restraints — a practice that is
far from routine.
* We also learned that dozens of people were being transported for
deportation while families and communities were left in the dark.
This is exactly why congressional oversight is so important.
No agency should be able to operate without accountability. No one should
be deprived of their dignity behind closed doors while the public is kept
in the dark.
I have never stopped fighting to hold ICE accountable, demand
transparency, and push for an immigration system rooted in humanity
instead of fear. That work didn't begin with this visit, and it certainly
won't end here.
But taking on an administration determined to expand detention and
deportation isn't easy. It requires people across the country standing
together and refusing to look away.
