John, I'm Dr. Macky Mbavugha, a doctor and field coordinator for the International Rescue Committee in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Because you're a committed supporter, I wanted to personally give you an update on the IRC's response to the current Ebola outbreak here—and show you how our teams are working to stop it before it spreads further.

The outbreak comes at an especially difficult time. Years of conflict have weakened health systems, displaced families and left communities increasingly vulnerable.

But John, the IRC has faced this kind of situation before. During the 2018 outbreak and the previous outbreaks, we worked with more than 70 health facilities in this region. It is on this experience that we are building today.

In response to this current outbreak, we have launched an emergency response with DRC government health authorities, aiming to reach over 500,000 people. With your support, we are focusing on three things:

1. Preventing Infections. We're distributing protective equipment, strengthening water and sanitation systems, improving triage and isolation areas, and training community members to identify cases and trace contacts.

2. Building Trust. Our teams work alongside local leaders and health workers, going door to door and using radio, social media and community gatherings to share accurate health information and counter misinformation.

3. Protecting the most vulnerable. Beyond medical care, we're providing mental health support, services for survivors of gender-based violence and cash assistance to help families recover.

My team and I are doing everything we can to deliver relief. Here are a few snapshots from the recent weeks:

[May 26, 2026] Bibuya Eric, an IRC logistics officer, is preparing infection prevention and control (IPC) kits.

[June 8, 2026] The Medical Director of Rwampara Hospital in Bunia receives sanitation and infection prevention supplies delivered by the IRC.

We will be sure to keep you updated on our emergency response and what we are seeing on the ground.

Thank you for your kindness and compassion,

Dr. Macky Mbavugha
Field Coordinator, International Rescue Committee

P.S. This kind of response is only possible with the generosity of people like you. I hope you'll consider starting an emergency monthly gift now to enable us to keep delivering for the people who need it most in the DRC and in other crisis areas around the world. I'm told that right now, your first gift will be matched to go five times as far.
