The coffee's on, and my pups Prairie and Meadow are sprawled in the one patch of sun coming through the camper window, so it's quiet enough to think for a moment.

So here's a small thing I think about a lot, because it's the whole reason a guy like me can run for a Senate seat as an independent.

A dollar isn't worth the same everywhere. Give a dollar to a campaign in New York or Texas, and it vanishes into media markets so expensive that a single television ad can cost fifty thousand dollars. Give that same dollar here, and it does the work of about 39 of them, because South Dakota is one of the cheapest, most efficient media markets in the entire country.

I find something almost hopeful in that. It means the biggest, most powerful state donors don't get 39 times the say out here.

It means working folks chipping in ten dollars on a Sunday morning is, on this ground, as loud as a rich man writing a much bigger check somewhere else. The map, for once, is on the side of regular people.

That's not a gimmick and it's not a fake match. It's just a fact about where this race is being run.
