As wildfires destroy hundreds of homes in Eastern Washington and tens of thousands of people remain evacuated, I can't help but think about the work we must do to curb these catastrophes.

Historic fires ravaged Southern California over a year and a half ago, and many people are still waiting on aid to rebuild. This is an issue that affects millions of Americans – and with the warming climate, is becoming more common.

Not only do wildfires affect infrastructure and ecosystems, they jeopardize our national security and economy. This is an issue that is personal to me not only as your representative, but as the co-founder of an organization to find solutions to stop this crisis.

That's what makes my work in Congress so important. I've introduced legislation, the bipartisan Wildfire Response Modernization Act , that would strengthen the wildfire monitoring program we rely on for earlier detection, quicker evacuation, and safety for firefighters.
