The federal agency responsible for overseeing historic preservation reviews is considering a rule that could allow government agencies and developers to push through projects without consultation with Tribes or states.

That would put sacred, historic, and cultural sites at risk — while cutting Tribal communities out of decisions that directly affect places of deep cultural and spiritual significance.

That's why my Senate colleagues and I are urging the government to work directly with Tribes and states to create a proposal that actually improves the process — without undermining the rights and voices of those most directly affected.

Tribal consultation exists for a reason: it ensures that those with generations of knowledge and connection to sites have a meaningful voice before the federal government approves projects that could damage those same sites.

I support making the review process work better, but modernizing this process can't come at the expense of Tribal voices or the expertise of the people who have protected these sites for generations.
