Jeanine Pirro stood at a July 2 press conference and said she had “tremendous evidence” that a sixty-seven-year-old Olympic canoeist had forcefully and violently torn up the liner of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool with both hands. She did not. The Interior Department had already concluded the damage came from a botched installation—rain, wind, a missing sealing product, and a rush to finish before the July 4 celebration—and on July 31 Pirro filed a twenty-page motion asking a judge to make the whole case disappear.

In this special edition of AMPED UP, Cliff Schecter sits down with Glenn Kirschner, who spent thirty years as a federal prosecutor and twenty-four of them in the very D.C. United States Attorney’s Office Pirro now runs, to walk through how a bike ride past a peeling pool liner turned into a federal indictment of an Olympian.
