Let's be honest about what's happening to the right to vote in this country.
I've spent my entire career in Congress fighting to expand it. I authored the Help Students Vote Act to make sure young people could register and cast a ballot without jumping through hoops designed to discourage them. I helped pass the For the People Act through the House — the most significant expansion of voting rights in a generation.

The SAVE Act would require Americans to produce a passport or a birth certificate just to register to vote. Think about that for one second. Millions of Americans — students, seniors, married women whose names don't match their birth certificates, working people who have never needed a passport because they've never needed to leave the country — would suddenly find the ballot box locked, and the key is a document they don't have.
Utah just conducted one of the most exhaustive citizenship reviews of any state in this country's history — more than two million registered voters — and found exactly one confirmed case of a noncitizen registering. Zero instances of a noncitizen voting.
So let's call this exactly what it is:
It is not election security. It is election engineering. It is a deliberate, calculated effort to decide the outcome of elections before a single vote is cast — by making sure fewer of the "wrong" people get to cast one.
I did not run for Congress to watch that happen. I built my career trying to open the door to democracy wider, not slam it shut on the people who need it most.
