Helga Zepp-LaRouche, in opening the 166th consecutive meeting of the International Peace Coalition, noted that 81 years after the barbarous attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we are closer to global nuclear war than at any other time in history, including the Cuban Missile Crisis.
The U.S. decision to launch an unprovoked war of aggression against Iran, coupled with the Trump Administration’s failure to achieve any meaningful results with Russia following the August 15, 2025, meeting in Anchorage, Alaska, has caused trust in the United States among nations to fall to zero. The neocons, Christian Zionists, and doomsday preachers within the Trump Administration—including Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Eldridge Colby—are now calling for a new nuclear doctrine in which “credible options,” including the use of tactical nuclear weapons in conflict, may be considered.
One of the underlying factors behind this normalization of the unthinkable—the proliferation of nuclear weapons, and of nuclear warfare itself—is what Helga Zepp-LaRouche referred to as the “Malthusian factor in the international financial system.” She cites a new report published in Sustainable Development, which argues—not for the first time, but again—that, for environmental reasons, the world’s population should be reduced by half, to only 4 billion, by 2200. “Naturally,” Zepp-LaRouche went on, “it would have to be done through voluntary methods, but we know that the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse have been named before as a way to reduce the population.” Moreover, it is only by increasing, not decreasing, world population that the wealth of the planet, including its physical resources, be increased. The world needs more people!!
Both the fundamentalist Christian Zionist worldview now expressing itself in the White House and the Malthusian ideology of the Club of Rome, Bertrand Russell, and today’s “environmental” movement spring from the same roots: a hatred of humanity and a rejection of the idea that Man is the living image of God, created to be fruitful and multiply.
It is the latter tradition that must be upheld today, and it is the subject of Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, or The Magnificence of Humanity. That document should be read alongside Pope Leo XIII’s Rerum Novarum (On New Things) Pope St. John XXIII’s Pacem in Terris (Peace on Earth), and Pope Paul VI’s Populorum Progresio, which contains the famous formulation, “the new name for peace is development.” The four encyclicals, along with several works by Pope St. John Paul II, stand within the same tradition of affirming the dignity of the human person, the common good, and the conditions necessary for human flourishing.
When the underlying conception of man changes, then, and only then, will the danger of thermonuclear war disappear from humanity. It is at that level—the level of ideas—that the direction of history is ultimately decided. Today’s Manhattan Project will discuss the tragedy and hope of this moment, at the 81st anniversary of the dawn of the atomic age.
