Folks, I've spent the last few weeks doing what I do every August: driving all over Chicagoland, sitting in library meeting rooms and VFW halls, listening to whoever walks in the door.

And almost every stop, somebody tells me a version of the same story: "I called my representative’s office, and nobody ever called me back."

So…why is this happening?

It’s simple math.

Let’s rewind to 1929, the last time Congress raised the number of House seats to 435.

At the time, each member represented roughly 280,000 Americans.

Today, we still have 435 House seats — only now each member represents 770,000 people. And that number climbs every time the Census Bureau updates the population count.

So when you can't get your rep on the phone, or a town hall turns into standing-room-only chaos with no time for real dialogue, that's why.

This is exactly the problem my Equal Voices Act is built to fix. It's the centerpiece of my legislative package, A Common Sense Vision for American Democracy , and it would:

1) Add roughly 250 seats to the House

2) Cap the population of any House district at 500,000

3) Create multi-member districts to ensure equal representation

4) Reduce the workload for overburdened congressional staff so they can better help you when problems arise. (That's the difference between a callback in a week and a callback never.)

This is really the second step. Fixing our broken system STARTS with electing leaders who'll tighten the nuts and bolts of our democracy instead of taking a sledgehammer to it.

That's why I'm asking if you'll invest $25 or more to support my reelection so I can keep fighting for reform and build a democracy that actually works. [[link removed]]
