Happy Saturday morning.

Mike Rounds has made himself Washington's champion of the AI build-out. He co-chairs the Senate's AI Caucus, he's posed shaking hands with the tech billionaires, and he wants a wave of massive data centers — the giant warehouses of computers that run AI — built across the country, including right here in South Dakota.

Now, a data center sounds like progress. Sometimes it is. But one of those big facilities can drink hundreds of millions of gallons of water a year to cool its machines, and pull more electricity than a whole town.

And when it does, somebody has to pay to build all that new power. If the rules aren't written carefully, that somebody is you — in your monthly electric bill and your town's water supply.

South Dakotans already saw this coming. This spring, our own legislature passed a law to make data centers pay their own power costs instead of dumping them on regular ratepayers, and to keep them from draining local water.

The folks back home are busy protecting South Dakota families from the bill. Mike Rounds is in Washington cutting the ribbon for the industry that sends it.

Ask yourself who funds Rounds’ campaign. The same AI and crypto world that profits from every one of these data centers — a crypto super PAC sitting on roughly $170 million, an AI super PAC right beside it — is spending to keep Mike Rounds in that seat.

I spent nineteen years as a JAG reading contracts for a living. I know the difference between an investment in South Dakota and an investment in the people writing the checks. Rounds has that backwards.
