In this issue:

Elderly and of End of Life Care Report Launched to Packed Audience

The MCB launched its groundbreaking report into the state of elderly and end of life care in Muslim communities to a packed audience at City Hall, London on 28th August.

The report found, among other things that:

  • The number of Muslims aged 65 and over is estimated to increase from 110,000 in 2011, to 450,000 by 2036; and that
  • 38% of Muslim women aged 65 and above self-declared having bad or very bad health.
In an earnest discussion, many issues were raised around the dire need to prepare for the oncoming crisis that will hit Muslim communities in the decades ahead.

The Sun backtracks as Centre for Media Monitoring strikes again!

The thorn in the side of sloppy journalists, demagogues and Islamophobes everywhere - the MCB's Centre for Media Monitoring - struck another blow against the scourge of inaccurate reporting on Muslims and Islam.

Trevor Kavanagh of the The Sun, was forced to correct his mistake as he claimed, falsely of course, that there were to be "laws that risk criticising Islam a hate crime", when discussing the new definition on Islamophobia. The correction was made on 29th August.

Your MCB is growing!

We are proud to announce a new addition to your MCB team. Lamees Hafeez joins as Operations Manager and Zainab Gulamali will be starting this month as your new Public Affairs Manager, working directly with Miqdaad Versi our new Head of Public Affairs.

Lamees will be ensuring that all MCB projects and operations run effectively, efficiently and excellently. She joins us after a decade in the charity sector in senior management positions. She has previously worked in the field in Turkey, Syria, Jordan and Iraq.

Zainab brings with her bags of experience from her time as Head of Parliamentary Affairs at Plaid Cymru where she wrote speeches, briefings on topics ranging from Brexit, foreign affairs, home affairs and helped write the party manifesto, pitched and wrote op-eds, and led campaigns. With an election potentially around the corner, her appointment has come at a very busy time.

Join us in wishing all our new additions well in their roles.

Autism Hour

Autism Hour - Get your mosque involved!

On Sunday 16 of June 2019, Finsbury Park Mosque hosted the first ever Autism Hour held at a mosque in the UK. This pioneering initiative was conceived by sister Sara Mangera, a mother to two autistic boys, in conjunction with the National Autistic Society and supported by the MCB.

Visiting the mosque is an integral part of a Muslim’s life but for autistic Muslims, it is often a difficult and anxiety-filled experience with too many bright lights, packed and crowded halls, loud announcements and aadhan, but simple measures can make your mosque more accessible. The MCB is encouraging mosques to hold their own Autism Hour on Sunday 6 October 2019, as part of national Autism Hour Week. Interested to take part? Get in touch now by emailing [email protected]
